How Your Unique Background Can Help You Land the Gig

The job application process can be discouraging. You might not think you meet the requirements, or you start comparing yourself to others in similar roles and think there’s no way you are qualified for the position. Even after you land an interview, you may be questioning what exactly sets you apart from other applicants. It can be difficult to articulate what makes you the best fit for the job, here are some things to think about to help you prepare:

What makes you different? You’re so familiar with your own story, you don’t realize just how much you stand out. Look back on your years in high school or college, what organizations were you involved in? Did you play sports? Were you balancing school and work? Then look at your work history. Even if you don’t think some of your past roles are relevant, it’s important to take experiences from everything you’ve been involved with to show just how well-rounded you are.

Now, take your experiences and apply them to the role you're interested in. In what ways does your background make you a good fit for this role? Everyone has something unique that they can bring to the table, make sure to show how your differences matter for this role. 

How are you talking about your differences? Storytelling is just as important as the story itself; you want to make sure you're being true to yourself, communicating well, and engaging your audience. Include key information about yourself to showcase your talents, while also presenting an authentic version of yourself.
